My father's been following this. Apparently, they still do put horses down on the track if something like that happens. But Barbaro is worth so much money (30 mil, I heard on the news) that they volunteered to do the life-threatening surgery. He'll never race again, either way.

I think they hop those horses up on so many drugs that they just go forward regardless of what's happening, the poor things.

truly, contenders for eighth wonder, these thoroughbreds.
the daily news had a pretty good layout today of what it took to put barbaro back together again.
heartbreakingly fragile, but astounding...

I think thoroughbred horse races were four miles long in the 1800's. It would be nice to return to longer races since thoroughbreds have been overbred for short distances. Some long races might mitigate some of the problems in the breed (too big, unsound, prone to bleeding) and shake things up. They change the rules of basketball when things go awry, don't they? If you can change the height of a pitcher's mound you can change the length of a race.
