At first, by your description I thought they might be from the doll's eye plant buuuuut I'm guessing not, looking at those pictures. And I don't think doll's eye is located in S. California anyway. You should maybe poke one a bit. Cut one open. If they really are/were some kind of egg, I doubt anything is still living inside now after being smashed a bit.

Homgggg that would be epic, and I think you're on to something. That texture on the last pic does remind me of what you see on the uhh... glans? of the stinkhorn. Bahaha. Also the sprouting stinkhorns look like and are known as eggs :V
