colin the whale.

So this little baby whale dubbed "colin" got abandonned by it's mother at only a few weeks old, and it has been treating a local boat like it is its mother.
I don't know about the other countries, but it's all over the news here.

Can't they introduce him to a whale pod or something? Don't whales and dolphins do foster care? Or do they just babysit for other pod members?

dolphins "babysit" form time to time, but then some species of male dolphins have a tendancy towards infanticide, so its not really a blanket behaviour.

whales do not at all, to my knowledge.

they've tried this a few times
they tried leading him out with a yacht he was suckling off, but he just followed the yacht back...
and i know they were planning on trying a sling but not sure if that ever happened before he got in such bad shape

This breaks my heart =/. Apparently they tried to feed him and it didn't work. I know putting him down is best for him, but it's still sad.

It's cruel to keep him alive as there is no way for people to help him... can't really bottle feed him and I doubt Sea World has a surrogate available to nurse and teach him.

Still sad though.

Sad as it is, it's probably for his own good. Being so young, he can't survive without his mother. Even if they tried to transport him somewhere he could get help (marine mammal center or whatever), he probably wouldn't even survive the trip. Poor little guy. D:
