Bolas Spider

I’m a first time poster and just found this community.

So my father (Ken Yeargan) is an entomologist at the University of Kentucky, and one of the creatures he’s studied is the bolas spider, who has a really nifty way of catching prey.

It is, for all intents and purposes, a creepy looking spider. All mushy and whatnot. Ick. But that was amazing video footage! And I'm in awe.

...and also thinking of possible nightmares I may have in the future of this spider growing much larger than scientifically possible and winging that sticky ball at me.

But wow! That was incredible. I'm so glad you posted it. And how strange you used to have them in your backyard, right? :)

Yeah, growing up with an entomologist as my father made for some weird experiences. I remember hanging out with him on the side of highways looking for egg cases of these spiders on tree limbs and thinking, this isn't normal father son stuff.

It may not be normal, but I gather it was rather interesting, that's for sure. And (it is late, forgive the Hallmark moment that's about to happen) it definitely is a bonding experience. And one that you will be able to hold onto forever. So that's cool.

However, I am pretty sure that your backyard would have gave me the creepy-crawlies for good. And horrific nightmares, as I said in the previous comment. I'm horribly intrigued by lots of insects, but want them positively nowhere near me.

Did you take dates out to the backyard? "And here are our spiders."
"Your what?"
"Spiders"
"AAAAH."
