I remember one lecture we had where we were told about an experiment that was trying to teach macaques (I think) about rudimentry currency. They had coloured tokens, and could get certain food for putting them in a bucket, I think.

It worked quite well. Until the monkeys started paying each other for sex...

I'm not sure how close to 'currency' it can be approximated. More like tokens - blue means apple, or similar.
But token-for-resource-for-sex is a more abstract concept than 'resource-for-sex' direct.

Everyone remembered that example for the exam, though!
