I wouldn't advise it. Octopi are notorious escape artists -- they scale virtually any surface, lift tremendous weights, undo latches, etc... and somehow imagine they can make it to the ocean from your carpet.

Plus most of the ones small enough to keep at home are venomous. :D

If you have a big enough tank, you could line the upper edge with astroturf and make sure nothing else is within reach. They don't like trying to walk on that, it hurts their suckies. :D
