"My daughter is missing!" Anderson didn't stop pacing. "She's been missing since yesterday!"
"Wait, Anderson," she held her hands out in front of her. "I don't even know you have a daughter."
He shoved his overlong fringe away from wild eyes. "You're not supposed to know. Nobody's to know. Jennifer's mother and I, we were barely acquaintances at that. Five days of the week, Jen stays with Ivy and Sinclair. And now she's gone missing. Fuck!"
Kim didn't know what to say. It was true that she had not kept in touch with Anderson much this past few years, but not knowing that her cousin-her gay cousin-had a daughter?
Through the thin walls of her office, she could hear a man on the radio talking about a mattress sale.

She never thought he'd shed tears while he begged the evil bastard to go on living. But dying in his arms, the Master didn't seem surprised.
That's them then, she thought. Travel through time and space, hurt each other and then do it again, still they get to carry each other.

For him the autumn of 1913 is a time blocked off, weeks lined up like journals on a shelf, bookended by the opening and closing of a watch. If he missed the woman he left there, he never said. Maybe that's how his mind copes with the chaos of so many centuries; he's got his past catalogued like a library and only calls it back at need.
Martha envies him that. She too is time traveller, doctor, storyteller, hero. Daughter, sister, and wife, besides. But the servant girl never goes away - some part of her is always on her knees.

Sam had always known he was going to be a policeman. Usually, when he said this, his mom would just smile and not even mention that, no sweetheart, little boys become policemen and little girls become policewomen.
His dad would mention it. And look disappointed, though Sam was hardly old enough to have done anything to disappoint him yet.
Strangers would mention it too, like they had any right. It was sometimes as if the whole world were conspiring against Sam.
But years later, Sam was himself, and - contrary paternal opinions aside - that self was a damn good cop.
