Well, generally speaking, the dolls are like small children. They've been wiped so many times they have no personality that hasnt' been imprinted on them by Topher's chair. We know enough of Caroline / Echo's backstory to know she entered the Dollhouse to avoid some possible criminal proceedings for vandalism, and that her "normal" personality is somewhat annoying; her Doll personae are much more interesting than Caroline herself. I found Mellie/November's backstory very affecting, and I really liked what Paul Ballard did for her at the end.

TBH I've never watched Joss Whedon's shows before so I didn't have anything to compare Dollhouse to. My own amazement came from the plot twists every week. I'm sorry you weren't amazed:( Also TBH I've never watched Heroes; the concept of people with superpowers doesn't do much for me :)) I guess that's why I can get into X-Men only in small doses (e.g. a movie series) but I could never follow the comics etc.

Right, I get the whole dolls-are-like-children thing. But as interesting as that concept is, I think it ultimately hurts the show, because it makes it harder for the viewer to connect to the character. There need to be things with which you can identify, and for me it's just too haphazard. I like the character, and she's interesting to me, but she changes personalities far too often for me to really identify with her, because it's tough to say who she really is. I think it's easier with characters other than Echo, because we see far less of their "other" selves.

I've watched JW's other stuff, and I think he's amazingly creative, but far from perfect. I'm trying to let this one stand on his own rather than be compared to his previous projects. So far, like I said, it's good, not amazing. But then again, it's season one, and it did get progressively better. A lot of Buffy season 1 was pretty lame (and a lot was awesome), IMHO, so I haven't given up on Dollhouse yet. ;)
