Summary
After more than 50 years, Spike has followed a hint that leads him to Xander's parents' house in sunnydale, where he finds his lover and bond-mate in a dishevelled but unharmed and unchanged state. The house is slowly being reconquered by nature, but there is no decay, only destruction by animals and natural forces.
Xander barely recognises Spike and seems to have lost coherent thought and the ability of speech, but manages to remember Spike's name somehow.
Scared and unsure what to do, Spike calls up Dawn and Willow, now co-heading the Watchers' Council, and they arrive and investigate the house, casting a spell to detect magic. They brought an important object along, and while they prepare for the spell, Spike tells Xander the story of their love and how they bonded in a ritual attended by all their friends.
After the spell has been cast, Dawn and Willow investigate the house again, and make a few interesting discoveries.

Chapter 21

"We need to burn the new runes into Xander's chest."

Willow's blunt statement rang hollow in the kitchen, as Spike stared at her.

"You bloody well better be kidding, Red. Not gonna let you burn Xander, you can come up with a new plan any minute now!"

He turned to leave the kitchen, but Dawn's hand on his elbow stopped him.

"Wait, Spike. Let us explain, ok?" Her big eyes looked at him hopefully.

"Better make it quick, Bit. Cause if it's not good, you'd better hit the books again before Xander gets worse!"

"Willow said we need to burn the new runes into Xander's skin, which is true, but she didn't say that it has to be painful or indeed involve actual heat or fire. I think we found a spell that can turn strong emotion into the equivalent of fire, powerful enough to ensure that the new runes overpower the ice contained in the rune on Xander's chest." She hastened to explain, relaxing as she saw the anger drain out of Spike.

"I think invoking your bond should more than do the job, but I'd like to give it some extra power, something primal and fierce, that will make sure the runes do their job, without disturbing the surrounding fabric of protection." Dawn continued.

"Because the one thing that we know for sure now is that this spell was cast to protect Xander, not to harm him. I think whoever wanted to protect Xander didn't quite know their power when casting the spell…" She blushed, making Spike look at her sharply.

"Dawn?" Spike's voice was inscrutable, as he observed her with sharp eyes.

She sighed. "I'm sorry Spike. I really am. I didn't know this would happen. Heavens, I didn't even think anything would happen!

"From what Willow and I can gather, the raw power I had found the most simple and effective way to protect Xander, but something else significantly augmented my power to create this safe haven and burn the runes into place, possibly at the exact moment the gas supply tank in your house exploded and Xander disappeared.

"We're going to need all we can muster to counter this power." Her big eyes looked pleadingly at Spike.

Xander had stood plastered against Spike's back until now, quietly observing the exchange. But as Spike tried to decide whether he could trust Dawn with this, Xander leaned forward and whispered "trust Dawn" into his ear.

Startled, Spike whipped around to face his lover, who met his eyes calmly and surprisingly alert.

"Trust Dawn," he repeated, before raising his right hand slowly and cupping Spike's cheek as he leaned in to kiss his lover.

"She knows," he added cryptically, after releasing his shell-shocked lover's lips.
