OK, so I have no clue about quilting other than I know piecing and stitching in the ditch and that quilting is actually the sewing together of the layers and not the piecing together of the pieces to make the quilt top....
It's fusable applique. You cut out the pieces (from a highly complex pattern in this case) and use fusible webbing to iron them together. There's not much piecing involved until you get to sewing the blocks together and putting a border on it. It's more like making collage pictures with fabric- you don't even hem the applique pieces- the edges are raw.
In some ways this feels a lot like cheating to me. Not that it isn't just as complex as a pieced or appliqued quilt- it is- but that it's not as useful since washing it very much would cause the pieces to come appart or fray. So it's an art quilt for the wall instead of being a quilt to cuddle up with.
Well I will be going back over it when I quilt it. I intend for my version to be washable with care... because I'm like you. If I can't use it, what's the point? Sometime I'll have to tell you the story of my copper cookware.

I'm not an artist. I'm an artisan. If it isn't useable, I've wasted time on it, IMO. Valkyrie, on the other hand, would probably love this.
