From time to time the question comes up "would you rather be too hot or too cold?". I believe that so far I've only heard the cold answer ( Read more... )

Here's a theory: "you have to be hurt to be happy" comes from parenting, which says things like "children have to learn that they can't always have what they want (therefore their parents should arbitrarily hurt them)". Or in a more general sense, "the morally right is unpleasant", but I think that's first engrained in childhood.

Because of this, people accept suffering as a good and necessary thing. And then view life in terms of it.

Also, I think I would probably prefer to be too hot, but this is in part because I have a special kind of hate for coldness, and in part because when asked "would you rather be too hot or too cold", I would expect my answer to inflict the state I chose on me, and would assume I'd have to suffer it for some period of time, otherwise the question seems a bit redundant. It describes a state of being that one could, hypothetically, currently occupy, so I would expect when answering the question to be choosing between which state to actually occupy. Which would rule out things like thermostats and ( ... )
