Allston writes better -- more real, not just funnier (though there's that too *grin*) -- characters, and characters are what I like to read about best, since for me, stories are about people. Sure, nice shiny explosions and space battles, but they wouldn't exist without the pilots, etc...

's another reason the X-wing books in general rock, cause they're not about Jedi (well, besides Corran in a couple...) and so there's no Force junk to write about. So the authors actually concentrate on the characters themselves, not their silly powers.

As for your last paragraph -- yeah, I'm a writer and, for some odd reason, I find it far too easy to get into Wes Janson's head. That might explain my preference for Allston too, I suppose.

But yeah ... it's the characters that get me. I really heart my pilots.

I'm also beginning to think that I prefer Allston solely based on the Janson Infatuation. Hence the survey. ;)

Ah, what shallow creatures we really are when we think about it. :D

Hm... that's a tough one... and technically I shouldn't answer because I know them both and would so get hit by the other on incrimidating evidence ( ... )

I really wish I could contribute to this, but I'm too rusty. I read the Wraith books earlier this year, but I haven't read Stackpole's books for a few years (I know -- sacrilege). Any comparisons I make, therefore, will be based on fuzzy recollections and be extremely shallow -- comedy/light-hearted vs. serious/dark. I will just say that I've read the Wraith books twice as often as the Rogue books because I feel more attached to those characters. For whatever that's worth.

On the other hand, alison_sky just left a fabulous compare/contrast, so I don't feel so bad about being useless. :)

I'm a geek and love reading essays about fictional things (like Buffy or Harry Potter). Would you be willing to post this for the rest of us? I think it'd be very interesting.

(And, alison_sky, you know them? So jealous. I'd love to meet them someday. I'm hoping a book tour will bring them to my area someday.)

Dragon*Con. Best place to see drunk people, half naked people saying that they are in costume when it's just duct tape covering the essentials, and meeting fabulous authors. I met Aaron and Mike in 2001, and worship them. They are probably the two most down to earth authors I know (karen Traviss as well).

I got to meet L.A. Banks this year (vampire writer) and FINALLY got to talk to KJA for a bit.

So, what do you remember the best? What's stuck with you the longest?

I haven't read the books recently, either. I won't say how long it's been, but I did finish my 9th time of SoA about a year ago. ;)

I have five pages done on my own opinions and views of the topic, but I'm thinking it's sounding fairly uneducated and biased. I wanted some other opinions and thoughts on the series and authors so I could think over some sides I know I'm missing (Like Alison_Sky's point about it having been a brand new concept to have -normal- people as a centerpoint for Stackpole's series).

It'd be only fair to post the paper when I'm done with it, if for no other reason than to be bashed about my horrible grammar. The final copy should be done and graded very soon.

Oh, and everyone I know that has met the boys has done so at conventions. (I've also, unfortunately, heard some real horror stories about Stackpole...)

i've always liked allston better. in stackpole's books, there's a few main characters who you know will never die unless its a huge major plotpoint. the rest of the squadron is just fodder, names of people dying to show that omg this is serious :O

allston on the other hand, fleshes out every single character in the squadron. you feel a connection to all of them. when /anyone/ dies you feel little tugs on your heartstrings.

not to mention i just like allston's writing style better. and the fact that he focuses on more than one character, unlike stackpole with corran horn.

"The Bacta War" was the first of these that I read, and I fell completely in love with Wedge and Corran, but especially Corran. I read the rest of the series and started getting the comics, since I loved the characters, the dynamic that they had, and the bad guys. Iceheart was the first bad guy I had absolutely no love for, though that changed a bit as I grew ( ... )
