"The Bacta War" was the first of these that I read, and I fell completely in love with Wedge and Corran, but especially Corran. I read the rest of the series and started getting the comics, since I loved the characters, the dynamic that they had, and the bad guys. Iceheart was the first bad guy I had absolutely no love for, though that changed a bit as I grew.

A while later, I grabbed Wraith Squadron because hey, it's Star Wars, and bonus, it's an X-wing book. I fell completely in love with Allston's writing. The jokes became these huge in-jokes with me and my best friend, I cried my eyes out when Phanan died, and I absolutely loved the way he wrote everyone. I've always been primarily a character person, so that's definately my primary draw to the series. The situations they found themselves in were probably the secondary appeal.

As for the author, it depends on my mood. Allston has the more general light-hearted tone, while Stackpole's action and drama have a somewhat dryer sense of humor to them. I love Allston both for his humor and for the fact that I met him at Aggiecon a couple of years back and engaged him in an hour-long conversation as no one showed up due to a change in the autograph room. And I'll always have a soft spot for Stackpole, who introduced me to the characters to begin with and created my EU crush for several years, Corran Horn. Come to think of it, they both also have a huge impact on my sense of humor and writing style, as the time period in which I started reading them was the time I started writing seriously.
