It is quite awful but then we don't need rules to do the roleplay part. Never needed it for AD&D, never needed it for Traveller. Just give us a set of combat rules for when we do fight and the rest we make up.

Minmaxing podcasts sound terrible, just like how to make über characters in WOW. I don't mind munchkin characters if everyone is having fun but this sounds crass.

Well, RFH is actually a pretty good podcast and the hosts are competent and likeable but D&D 4 is all about combat so there's very little else to talk about. Similar for it's sister show Order 66 that concentrates on Star Wars SAGA.

Now the obvious thing is to stop playing D&D 4 - which is harder than it sounds because it's what my group wants to play.

My other option is to GM again and bring more roleplaying and non-combat encounters to the game, but it'd be nice if D&D4 met me half way.

I agree that roleplaying doesn't need rules. I used to say this to critics of D&D 4 when it was first released but as time goes on I've started feeling that whilst you don't need rules for playing in character, some mechanics for rewarding roleplaying and overcoming non-combat encounters would go a long way.

The GM's book does give some advice on this but it pretty much amounts to "Oh yeah, you can give XP for disarming traps too."

I've learned a lot from Mouse Guard. I'm hoping that I can implement it in my D&D game.

That's why they invented Call of Cthulhu. Have you ever killed anything in that? :-D

Sorry my friend by that is what 4E is about. They've boiled out what they believe to be the impurities in D&D such as humor, plot and role-playing and were left with the purest essence of the game, kill things and steal stuff.

We have advanced to the past.

BTW, love your art, love your blog and have for a while. I wish you'd do some more Traveller art though. Love to see some more finished ships and such.

Take care,

Why I Don't Play 4e fatherfletch May 29 2009, 19:33:25 UTC
I agree with your statements. I bought the first three books (PHB, DMG & MM) when they came out, read through them, and promptly shelved them.
Long have I thought that it is the interaction with the fellow players and delving into a mutually constructed world that made Tabletop RPGs fun for me. I play my share of electronic diversions, but if I had to pick one for the rest of my life Tabletop games would win hands down.
Echo the sentiment on Traveller. I have used some of your sketches as inspiration for deck plans I have built, so keep them coming.
