Alta told me this morning that her teacher said they need to put their hair in a braid or a ponytail for a few weeks.  In one of the other classes "they have bugs that like to lay eggs in your hair ( Read more... )

I am thinking positive lice-free thoughts for you all. Ick!!!!

(On a side note, one of my colleagues said that her kids got lice from a Santa Claus. I'm not sure if that's true... he did look pretty ratty in the photos.)

Apparently, according to my half panicked researching this morning, lice prefer clean hair. Since I only wash the girls' hair once or twice a week, they should be protected by the natural oils on thier heads already.

The bugs were not found on the heads of anyone in Alta's class, so that is also good news. So long as we keep her hair up so it doesn't touch anything that might have lice on it we should be just fine. I think I'll go a head and wash her hair tonight (with tea tree mixed in the shampoo and conditioner) and put it up in a "crown braid" so it's not hanging down at all. School is out on Friday and for the rest of next week too, so I've only got a couple days of lice prevention to be really serious about, and that braid stays up for at least that long.

I was fortunate to have a boy who preferred to have a nearly shaved head during the "lice years" of school so I never had to deal with it with him. However, Jewell got it 3 times and it was a bear to deal with as she has the thickest hair ever and sleeps with 8 million stuffed animals and blankets.

I add peppermint oil to mine's bedhead spray for the same reason!! I heard that years ago. Good luck!!!

My sister and I both got lice when we were about that age... I remember my mom being grossed out but she just bought some medecine and combed our hair and washed some stuff and that was that.

There is a gross factor but the hassle of having to comb and comb and comb is really what I'm trying to avoid.

I only remember getting combed once... but I was so young that I probably just forgot or all the memories mixed together.

I got lice when I was in 9th grade. Mom and I were out on the deck nightly for at least a week combing.
