Crossposted to my personal journals, but I know several folks here don't follow those and am looking for opinions and whatnot, for my own curiosity ( Read more... )

I've got just a Kindle w/wifi that I ADORE. My dad got it for me Christmas of 2010 (wow, it's really been that long!) and I love reading on it. I'd love to try the Fire, but I don't really need a bunch of flashy lights and special features to read a book. I'd rather use my computer for browsing the net and such.

Mom got a Nook Color for Christmas '11, and it's pretty nice. I like that she can play with apps on it (kickin' her rear at Words With Friends... >_>) but I still prefer my simple, not-flashy Kindle. :3

Also should mention--the uh, case-thing dad got for my Kindle is fantastic. It was a little spendy but has a built-in light, which is fantastic because I like to read before I sleep, but HATE getting back up to turn the lights off, and the light is gentle, not like...having the screen of the Fire or the Nook Color in your face and making your eyes burn. e.e

I have a Kindle Touch with 3G, and I'm loving it to pieces. The build is sturdier than the Nook Simple Touch (my first e-reader, the design is nice and all, but the glue under the rubberized front has a nasty habit of coming up around the bezel).

Nooks are nice in that the interface is a bit more intuitive, and they have page-turn buttons in addition to the touch-screen.

Kindles, however, have much nicer deals on e-books. I prefer the Kindle store to the B&N store. Your Kindle books added to your Amazon wishlist actually show up on your device's store wishlist menu, which B&N doesn't do.

... so yes, personal preference, I'd go with a Kindle. I'm not sure about the Fire. I like the look of them, and the fact that they can do video streaming is nice, but having a reflective and back-lit screen while trying to read a novel would tire my eyes out very quickly. :<

(Probably more info than you actually needed, but THERE YOU GO.)

Lots of great input, thanks! We're also looking at Android-OS tablets, too. I mean, iPads are nice and the App Store I know is kickin' for Apple, but I'm not sure how much I'd end up using there to justify spending at least $150 more on an iPad versus, say, a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 or Asus Transformer. Which would not necessarily have the limitations I'd face with using a Fire in Canada. So, we'll have to see. :)

I've got a Nook 3G. I bought it several years back, and I have no real desire to upgrade. I love the thing to pieces. One of the best purchases I've made in years. The B&N store is more pricey, but my epub procurements aren't always precisely through there (*shh* >.>), since I tend to use ebooks as test cases for deciding whether to buy a hard copy, not as a proper library in themselves.
