Anyway, I have this level 80 Death Knight. Hadn't touched her since Wrath. At all. I think you can probably tell where this is going.

I do know that Frost 2H is the choice for leveling now although I was always Unholy before. So, since I couldn't find anything about leveling as Unholy anywhere,

Honestly, most of my characters leveled in tank spec if they could. I found that the Cata questing was utterly brutal in Wrath gear. I also never leveled as 2H frost, I was dual wielding and just monitored the AH for greens until I had two good one-handers.

I don't see why you can't level as Unholy if that's what you like. You'll probably have more fun than a 'recommended' spec. I can't help you much with a spec, Unholy was never a spec of interest to me, but I'd say read all your talents and explore your rotation.

I leveled through Cataclysm in Unholy and didn't have any problems. It's definitely my favorite spec as well... Maybe it's not something to be recommended, but I didn't change much with her after the expansion.

This. All unholy all the time for me. Never had a problem.

I was in ICC gear when the xpac dropped, though. And with the Death Strike nerf in 4.0 I can remember having to stop and eat every 2-3 pulls at first, which got annoying. It seems like that was worse in the beta, before I understood my new rotation, and then by the time the actual xpac came out I had had some practice with that in raids and things died a lot faster.

Also, I think being able to make the ghoul big and angry helps with survivability, because he pulls off me a lot, but it's important to have the glyph that makes him 50% tougher or whatever, not that I can remember what it's called, or he dies right away.

Seconding Cata leveling in Wrath gear being awful. My fury war went in to Hyjal wearing reasonable gear and I swear to god she died about 15 times before she got enough Cata gear to survive being poked lightly by the cultists there.

I can't help with your spec/gear, but leveling as a tank might be viable until you get more Cata quest greens. Potions are also a big help.

If you don't like frost and do like unholy....why are you playing frost? Because it's the popular spec? o.0

Just play what you like. It's not like ANY class/spec in the game is so damaged that you can't level or preform at least decently in dungeons if you choose to do so.

I also leveled my DK as unholy. Yes, maybe my dps could have been better using a different spec, but I didn't care. I was having fun, and my survivability was better than when I briefly tried frost.
