Help?

I know this is probably an annoying question for you that have been playing WoW for a while but I recently bought it and this past month I've seriously made at least 20 toons trying to figure out which class & spec I like the most. 2 of my highest are a Nelf Survival Hunter and a Belf Retribution Palidan. I got bored with my Paladin for some reason ( Read more... )

Just a comment about priests - they do have a dps spec. You don't HAVE to be a healing priest.

Anyway, mages. I've never played an arcane mage, but I think now how it works the more mana you have, the more damage your spells do with arcane. I have no idea how sustainable that is while leveling. Frost on the otherhand, is generally considered the leveling spec. With the slows and snares you get with the spec it's about survivability rather than pumping out huge numbers. It's also the spec mages generally use for PvP. It seems they made it vaible for raiding too, but Fire/Arcane still seem to put out better numbers than frost does raiding wise.

You see I didn't know that lol. Shows how much I know at this point lol. I don't really mind which spec is faster at leveling, as long as I'm having fun with it. Kwim? Hmmmm, I hate how indecisive I am. -___-

Hmm alright thanks! I guess I'll just try one and if I don't like it I can always reset my talent tree I believe right?

If I recall correctly, Frost used to be THE spec for leveling because you could farm mobs like a tank. Grab them all up, and unleash madness. It was very fast. I don't know how it works now however.

That's a lot of good info, thanks! Hmm this is a tough decision haha. It would be nice to cast on the move, I find myself running and trying to cast and I'm like oh wait, I have to stand still lol.

Ok, I leveled arcane way back in the day when missiles were a spell, not a proc, and you didn't learn blast til 64, and it was all different - but I regretted leveling that way as soon as I respecced. I just thought everyone had to stop and drink after every. single. mob. until I went fire!

I haven't tried it at low levels recently, but I think arcane would still burn through mana pretty fast, and you'd have to stop and drink a lot more than you would as fire or frost. I love arcane at 85, but I really wouldn't level that way.

Frost is a great leveling spec - it's very mana efficient, and you have the most effective snares and slows, so you can survive a lot more. I'd recommend that. Fire is also good for leveling - tends to kill stuff faster than frost, but you are a bit squishier.

Good luck, mages are awesome!!

Rogues get a LOT more fun after about level 20, if you can stick it out.

Yeah I've heard this but a friend of mine also couldn't get past 17 and she has an 85 priest. I think you have to really like playing a rogue. I mean it's fun for the most part but where I'm at now it got kind of annoying. But it's a Belf and I think more of it has to do with being stuck in the Ghostlands, I'm tired of the Ghostlands haha.

Rogues are a lot of fun to level in Subtlety spec. *has 4 rogues on different realms*
- faster movement in Stealth
- Shadowstep behind you foe and...
- Ambush critical hits that plow the health bar down to measly 10-40% quite often even without any fancy gear.

In short: *points to icon*

For leveling I would definitely recommend Frost. They have a lot more survivability plus you get the elemental pet to help you out early on! As frost you have a bunch of ways to keep things off of you plus ice barrier to help mitigate damage if they do get close enough to smack you. I leveled almost entirely as Frost on my mage alt, though I dabbled in Fire and Arcane a little just to see what they were like. I, personally, found arcane to be terribly boring but that was also in the previous expansion so a lot of things have probably changed. Frost is by far my favorite mage spec though. I mostly pvp with this character now that she's 85 so I still get to stay Frost for that :)

Thanks for your input. I think I'm going to go frost with my mage after reading all the replies so we'll see how this goes lol.
