I've seen it happen so many times I can't count - people killing the new hunter challenge rare pets as they're being tamed and I've ticketed many times

Thanks so much for sharing the link! I've never been one to kill or hunt rares, save for the Bloody Rare and Frostbitten achievements, and yes, it does get on my nerves a bit.
I kind of agree with the top poster on page 2 that finding a way to make the pet/player unattackable during taming would be game-breaking, but they should at least properly define this behavior as griefing and make it so that people are appropriately punished for it.
I agree with this as well, except there really shouldn't be player immunity - especially on a PvP server. Being attacked while in the middle of a tame is just one of the risks. :)
I have to courteously disagree. A hunter is a pet dependent class, just like a warlock. When they set it up that hunting down their voidwalker, imp, or any of the above allows other classes to kill the 'lock, I'll say that its just fine to kill the hunter trying to get a pet, or kill the pet so the warlock gets to wait for another 6-17 hour spawn of their chosen creature.
Maybe what they should do is fix these creatures so that they will basically one-shot anything that attacks them that ISN'T a hunter. They could explain this by giving the creature some innate "sense" that the hunter is approaching them with good intentions and a desire to hunt alongside it. I'm with you though, there's nothing for a player to gain when they kill such beasts, except the satisfaction of knowing they screwed someone else over - which is totally wrong.
ORRR... maybe a debuff on the person who kills the animal, something like "Wow, look at this jerk!" and stats reduced like res sickness. It could last several hours, making it a huge incentive to not go killing rare beasts.
I think this is a great idea. But I also think if Blizzard had intended for rare beasts to be for hunter taming only, they would have done this. Instead, they implemented a 25g reward for killing said creatures (the tear of loyalty).
This should be something to think about. If Blizzard wanted rares or some rares to be hunter only, they could have made it that way. They did the opposite by encouraging the killing of rares with achievements, rares, and 25g vouchers.
I personally think this is a nice idea. I just think the game is probably working as Blizzard intends in this respect. I don't approve of killing them for griefing purposes, but that's something that Blizzard could and should address separately imo.

Do you really want people new to the game getting one shot 'cause they dared attack a creature in a game that largely consists of running around and attacking creatures?

Heck on my hunter I *purposefully* get the most 'common' skinned pets and ended up with the most unique ones. :p
