So I was thinking

I was watching someone do a brief video on the Southern Barrens the other day, and he mentioned that the zone actually feels "contested." While it's not PVP, you do quests that involve other-faction NPCs and such. And that got me thinking--why are there no PVE contested zones in the game ( Read more... )

On PVP servers, those zones are actually contested, meaning that everyone is flagged for PVP. When you're in a Horde area as Alliance, and vice-versa, you're flagged for PVP. :) This causes some discord.

I suppose the reason the system you describe isn't in affect is because
1) The zones that get the most play are 85+ zones.
2) Someone who is leveling and is being bothered by a higher-level char, or doesn't like that zone wouldn't have many places to go.

It could work if they made the instanced BGs have more benefits, but really, people at that low level just want to PVP because it's fun and/or they want to level faster.

There are other ways PVP affects PVE areas, like in Outlands, where the incentive to do the objectives gives you honor and buffs.

I actually meant having it an end-game zone, ala Wintergrasp or TB, but with a PVE focus. I guess it's true that those would become PVP hotbeds on PVP servers, which would definitely dampen the fun for those who are looking for PVE ways to spend their time.

Maybe I'm just bored of not being able to make any apparently impact on Azeroth, whatever the quest text tells me. :|

I think TB has a great end-game focus but with terrible execution, personally.

Plus you get PVE elements in there as well.
