Words and Phrases I have come to despise.

There are a number of words and phrases that I absolutely cannot stand, simply because they mean something entirely different than their strict definition. Here are a few of them, and why I can't stand them.

(1) "Wonderful Opportunity" - I have never once, in my entire life, had someone utter those words to me in a sincere and truthful manner. Not ( Read more... )

I've always joked about when "opportunities" and "challenges" are presented at work.

Translation usually was "we want you 7/24 in the office with a crap project no-one else in the company wants to do that will be behind schedule the minute it starts"

I also have some favourites. As a boss I had some pet ones.

"I'm don't mean to sound like I'm the type that complains but....." My thought is anyone that provides a disclaimer usually is exactly what they say they aren't. other examples include "I'm not a gossip/tattletale/one to ask for special treatment etc.

And a special favourite: How about the phrase "Can I ask you a question...?" They never quite understand my response

Those are good. Right up there with "no offense but..."

I generally cut that one off by saying: "...but what you're about to say is actually grossly offensive. Roger that!"

The late Gore Vidal also had a piece of snark I always liked.

"Any time someone asks me: 'Can you keep a secret?' I respond with: 'No. And obviously you can't either!'"

"No offense but" I knew there was one I was trying to recall that I missed and that was it.

Indeed.
And there's also the relationship-related ones:

(1) I promise! Just an inch!

(2) It's not you, it's me.

(3) She (or he) means nothing to me!

(4) Maybe we should just be friends...

(5) Don't worry baby, I won't come in your mouth.

(6) She/he is like a sister/brother to me.
