Hi everyone :)
I'm volunteering in Vietnam for 6 weeks with my university (there's 10-15 of us going) this summer, then a few of us are taking a quick 2 week tour round cambodia and possibly thailand. I'm only volunteering for a couple of hours a day, although most days I will probably stay in the orphanage/school and help out, etc, I'll still have ( Read more... )

i love frommers guides, we use them for everything.
people recommend the maleria tabs, but we've never used them (we brought them the first time we went to cambodia and they just sat in our bag), and we never have even really gotten mosquito bites in SE Asia except this one time we got drunk at night down by some water in siem reap. some strong deet repellent works fine but isn't needed in the cities. hoi an is gorgeous, although very touristy, but still one of my favorite places ever. i had a jacket made there for very cheap.
eat: everything. get some fresh to-order banh xeo, some big head shrimp, some hot vit lon, and pho pho pho. grilled goat, grilled boar, mystery meats, fried rat, and gallons of bia hoi. get some cao lao, that stuff is great. and bun cha. but banh xeo is my favorite, and in hoi an it's AMAZING, go to the morning market early and eat as much of it as you can. this lady is a banh xeo wizard:http://www.flickr.com/photos/

For the beach, go to Sihanoukville in Cambodia, but take your maleria tablets and deet!

In Hue, we were only there for a few days, but took a motorbike tour with Cafe on Thu Wheels (was in the lonely planet). A whole day basically of zipping around through the nearby countryside on the back of a bike with a great guide, visiting temples, and going through little villages, through herds of cattle on tiny narrow bridges over rice fields. In our 6 months of travelling it was one of our favourite days, highly recommended!
