I agree with Robin, but would like to add a couple things: I always try to explicitly offer to chip in gas money (though sometimes I forget)--even when people are going in my direction. Some people will say no (or practically get insulted when you go to buy the gas for them... I had that happen last Saturday evening), but others will feel better about giving you rides. Who knows, you may be making it possible for them to afford going wherever too by splitting the gas money. *shrug

The only issue with offering to find alternative transport is that in the major cases it isn't always possible due to service hours for buses.
I, too, have had a few people object to me using my own "alternative transport" methods. A once-regular to the Inferno used to make sure I got a ride back, even if I did have my bike.
I don't mind giving rides. :) I need to be more social. You just have to remind me to death that I promised to give a ride or I will flat out forget, especially when classes are hectic. -_-;
Which reminds me, did you get your sewing done? I just remembered today that I was supposed to loan you a sewing machine, but I found a second solution. Our lovely Baroness gave Craig a sewing machine, which he gave to me. It seems to just need to be formally cleaned to run. If you want it, it is yours; I have a machine already.
There's a little bit that I need to finish up, but that's about it. I don't need a machine, I'd just like to borrow one.
I kind of figured that your household didn't mind giving rides, given the number of times that you guys picked me up from my apartment so that I could sit and write poetry on your floor while you worked on my computer.
As another sometimes taxi, I'd basically agree with Sister Bluebird on this. Oftentimes, carpooling can be fun, if you and the person that you're getting rides from live near to one another. If somebody's going out of their way, however, I'd offer them gas money, or something, unless they have explicitly offered. Also - if you can, ask ahead of time - its much easier. And, finally - really do consider the taxi option - if you need rides during non-bus hours, but only occasionally, then taking a taxi isn't usually much money.
Can help with the first, not with the second, and I think most of the people who would be giving me rides wouldn't want the third, even if I wanted to provide that.

There are a few other issues here, though, that I'm not willing to discuss in a public forum out of politeness.

Oh, and Badger Cab has the best rates in Madison. Downtown to my house is like $12.

I'll consider that.
