That Which Entertains Me

This is the stuff that passes my free time of late:

Podcasts:
Better in the Dark - Two Brooklyn boys mouth off about sci-fi, fantasy, and horror movies. I'm a little biased about this one, admittedly, because I happen to know the two Brooklyn boys in question, but I think this is an entertaining podcast for any self-proclaimed movie fan. Eddie Izzard also makes an appearance in OCEAN'S 13 now in theatres, FYI.

13 > 12 and nearly = to 11, IMO.

Wasn't he in 12 too? I never got around to seeing that one, but a neighbor assured me that it wasn't necessary to understand 13. Hmm....

I don't remember him in 12, but I haven't seen that one since it came out in theatres (whereas I've seen 11 numerous times on DVD) so it's possible. There are some minor characters from both 11 and 12 making appearances in 13, but your neighbor is correct, it's not necessary to have seen both to enjoy the new one.

I keep telling Tom we should do an episode that is nothing but tangents and digressions.

THE RICHES is total brilliance. Why didn't anybody ever tell me Eddie Izzard was so mollyfoggin' cool? BBC America showed one of his stand-up concerts the other night and I recorded it. I'm saving it for tomorrow night to watch.

Dude, the BBC versions are cut to ribbons. I've got most of his standup (at least the stuff that's been released in the US) on video and DVD. Remind me, and I'll bring 'em next time I come up there.

I'll check out that History podcast, Russ. And maybe Derrick and Tom's too! Ha!

I don't have a problem with Julian McMahon as Doom. He did the best he could, I'm sure. I have a problem with how they decided to go with Doom in the movies period.

SPOILER!

So Doom gets the board, right? And he has all this unfathomable cosmic power, right? So he flies off, and the FF give chase...

RICHARDS:
Doom! We gotta get the board back to the Surfer so he can stop Galactus from destroying Earth.

DOOM:
Catch me if you caaaaaan, Richards!

Um... okay. What? The REAL Doom would have been all, "Man, FUCK the Surfer. I'll go up there and whoop on Galactus my DAMN self. Then, I'll take his power, and use that to run this world like I run my Latverian hoes."

I liked the movie a LOT. But Doom in BOTH movies was weak, weak, weak.

SPOILERS HERE, TOO.

Yeah, Doctor Doom is by far the weakest link in the two FF movies. I had hopes that when he was more-or-less "healed" in Latveria by the Surfer that we'd see the writer attempt to reconstruct the character more in line with the Victor we all love to hate... but noooooooo, he still comes across as a New York socialite with a jealous chip on his shoulder that raided the wardrobe department of an off-Broadway production of Man In The Iron Mask and mixed in his personal penchant for hooded robes.

And that's pretty blasted darned sad. 'Cause if you don't get the BAD GUY right, it damages the whole sense of conflict and good vs. evil that drives hero-based stories.

Still? Had fun. Go Figure.

It puzzles me that they just can't seem to get Doom right, considering how "right" a lot of other things turn out in this series (my opinion, natch).

Like Doc said, though, I still enjoyed the movie a lot. I think I liked the first one more than most comic geeks did, too.
