Some time ago, jamused mentioned to me that there's this place in Irvine called Philly's Best, which is a cheesesteak shop founded by an expatriate who actually knows how to make cheesesteaks. As you can see if you go to the site, he's got a lot of franchisees now, but the Irvine location is one of the originals. Now, I wasn't exactly jonesing for a ( Read more... )

Philly Cheesesteaks.

Philly Cheesesteaks.

Philly. Fucking. Cheesesteaks?

No no no no no no no. You don't go on vacation to sample cuisine you can get at home!

You should be dining on In 'n Out morning, noon, night and "fourthmeal".

Well, for starters, it's not much of a vacation, because like I said yesterday...working. But the point isn't that I came all the way to California to get a cheesesteak, because, as I said, I didn't. The point is that if they're going to claim to be "authentic Philadelphian," then they need to stand up to the scrutiny of an authentic Philadelphian...or failing that, me. It's a sacred trust that I take very seriously. I promise that I'll make an effort to try an In 'n Out while I'm here, 'K?

Conference? Or meeting with clients/writers?

One of these days I will make a pilgrimage to Philadelphia specifically to get an authentic Philly cheesesteak. And, you know, to see the rich American history or something like that.

I'm always afraid of overselling In 'n Out. I do it with Krispy Kremes to. So many people are like, "It's just a hamburger. They're just donuts." But no, no no. In 'n Out is appointment dining first chance possible whenever I enter California (or Arizona if I'm coming from the direction of Texas).

Alas, nothing so interesting...just the vagaries of self-employment. We're here for a family thing, but I got a lot of work in late last week, and it needs to be done right away, so I had to bring it with me. I could have said, "Sorry, this'll have to wait until next week, I'm out of town," but since I'm taking an honest-to-goodness, completely-out-of-contact, week-long vacation next month, I didn't think it would work for me to do that this week too.
