Some time ago,
jamused mentioned to me that there's this place in Irvine called
Philly's Best, which is a cheesesteak shop founded by an expatriate who actually knows how to make cheesesteaks. As you can see if you go to the site, he's got a lot of franchisees now, but the Irvine location is one of the originals. Now, I wasn't exactly jonesing for a steak, since I've only been in Southern California two whole days, but if there's a place in Irvine that's claiming to have "authentic" Philly cheesesteaks, I'm obligated to go check them out.
They're pretty good.
The roll was a bit soft, but a reasonable facsimile of Amoroso's. The steak was just right, prepared properly on the grill where I could see it, and the cheese was generous -- no Wiz here, or provolone, just American, which I realize is fightin' words for some, but it's OK by me. Onions and peppers are available, but I had mine wit'out, as is my preference. The store itself is a bit overdone, in Eagles colors, with cardboard standees of Rocky and Randall Cunningham, but not too bad, overall. And they had Tastykakes on the counter, which is a nice bonus.
Time was when it was impossible to get a real cheesesteak anywhere but southeastern PA, but I've had good ones in Maryland, and even on Maui, so I guess it's spreading. You can add Irvine to the list, and I give Philly's Best my seal of approval.
