on the question of happiness

Of course I do. Maybe not as often as I used to, but I also have a tendency to shut off all distractions when I'm busy at work anyways ( ... )

Happiness for me, can’t just be about fun experiences. I need to make things, solve problems, improve other people’s lives. My life is about fixing problems. I mean, look at my apartment. Small bedroom? Folding bed. Poor organization? Build shelves. No towel rack? Build another shelf with a rack. Dark kitchen corner? Install motion-activated light. Weird wiring and non-functional light switches? Add in automatic and voice-activated lights. Uncomfortable paint on deck? Get artificial turf. But you’ll notice I’ve done very little to decorate the apartment - when I make furniture I make it the best I can and make it as well as I can and try to include some aesthetically-pleasing forms, but I don’t decorate per se ( ... )

I remember this co-worker since you complained about him quite a lot :P To me, it doesn't sound like he's truly happy and is making excuses for the life that he has. And, in the end, I think that it's okay that he is not writing and he is in a job that he doesn't quite like as long as he accepts his life and the decisions he has made. Possibly my biggest gripe is people who make excuses for things and blame everything else around them rather than take any sort of accountability. It sounds like he's that type of person. This gripe of mine is not applicable to the "people in Malaysia" thing or even toward our own parents (at least I don't think mine were really "privileged" enough to consider the question of happiness for the majority of their lives) that you wrote earlier, but is rather toward people who are living in comfortable means and who have a distinct choice in things ( ... )

"Unfortunately, this is all very stream-of-consciousness and probably way too much about me." - Not at all. Maybe this delving deeply into ourselves is the reason why we're BFFs?
