Pieces shalmestere, hudebnik, and I played yesterday on recorders: "Dou way Robin," "Ma Tre Dol Rosignol," Machaut's "De toutes flours," and "De tous biens plaine," the last in two different keys so I could get the line in my head for alto experimentation. There were one or two other pieces in there too, I think, but I forget because playing F fingerings on alto ( Read more... )

I love the alto recorder. Such a gentle, soothing instrument.

It really is. It works much better than soprano for an awful lot of pieces.

I have been contemplating picking up the alto recorder again. I found my recorder, but I don't know where all my music went...

Actually what I really want, I already have, it's just in storage at my parents' place and not readily accessible. My violin teacher self published a few compilations of baroque music for one and two treble instruments. Also stored in the same place are all the pieces from my high school early music group for which I learned the Alto recorder to begin with. I guess what I'm looking for are simple melodic pieces that are good to noodle on and not overly trite. Any suggestions?

I don't have anything baroque at all, and most of my late medieval/Renaissance stuff is polyphonic -- but if you're interested, some of the early medieval monophonic tunes are lots of fun to improvise around. I like the Cantigas de Santa Maria and the Llibre Vermell tunes; let me know if you want linkage. :)

I know what you mean, I'll go for sopranino for something that's just easier to finger in F, and my mind will blank out. Then I'll figure it out and be fine, pick up tenor, and have no clue what to do with it. Last practice I managed to do the first part of something in F fingering and then switch without realizing it halfway through. >_

The more you work on it, the easier it gets :-)

Back in the day, I noticed that once I started playing alto, some lines just "looked" like alto lines, and that helped reinforce the fingerings--just another data point....
