Birds of a feather

We had the first of the severe Autumn gales in England last night;  these are nothing like the hurricanes and typhoons endured elsewhere in the world but enough to bring down trees and to sweep unwary people into the sea.  The wind and rain and stormy conditions were worst in coastal areas, which has the effect of driving the seabirds inland.  This ( Read more... )

Poor silly birds. Maybe they will find and eat food scraps on the way back home. They do seem to be able to makes do with restaurant parking lots...

I think we do have gulls here that have never seen the sea (they scavenge on dumps and in bins, as you say) but this bunch has definitely come inland for shelter. There's a river about 3 fields east of this rugby pitch so perhaps that was the attraction. Or perhaps they just fancied a game - it was muddy enough!

Now that the winds have died down, they have probably headed back south to the shore, no doubt snacking on the way.

PS was hit hard but he said it was not as bad as it could have been. I thought you were far enough north that the storm would not bother you.

All those seagulls! I hope they find their way back to the ocean.

Hello! We had strong winds rather than a storm here so we were, indeed, lucky.

Yes, so many gulls! There were far more than I could fit in the photo! As soon as the wind dropped and it was daylight, they left, flying back south to the sea - probably near PS!

That's interesting! I wonder how long they'll stick around for.

Almost no time at all - as soon as the wind dropped and it was daylight, they left, flying back south to the sea and to their food source. Well, they like bins too, as well as the sea!

Yes, the daytrippers were here, looking like spectators invading the pitch. Away match you see.
