It's the night before it's their turn to leave, and so those of EnMaCho are told to stay together. Someone's drawn the curtains, but eerie rainbow light still occasionally flickers from the cabin windows, picking out fiery glints in the assembled shinigamis' hair. The others are asleep, or at least better at pretending, so they sit up in their beds and avoid each other's eyes.
"Hisoka-kun, are you going to miss this place~?" Yuma murmurs at last.
"...maybe," he answers guardedly. She smiles at that; leans over to brush the bangs out of Saya's face.
"I know I might. You get attached, because no one here really dies."
"Fukiya-san..."
"But we might not remember, anyway~!"
"..."
"I know! Let's have a memory test and see if I still know it when we get home. Would you prefer gold silk, or maybe lime-green taffeta to match your eyes? ♥"
"No, Fukiya-san."

Whenever Yuma speaks to Hugo, she finds out more about his world. In all her curiosity, she only learns enough that he can see her sympathy, but never so much that she can fully understand.
Truth be told, she's afraid of where he comes from--afraid that if she builds up too clear a picture of the war he fought and the land he fought it for, she will want to go there. Abandon Hokkaido, with its glittering winters and magical courts, to others who may take up hers and Saya's painful duties. Escape to a world that sounds real, hard-edged, fiery and alive.
She wonders what kind of strength his mother must have, but never allows herself to ask.

1. Saya and Yuma
For the elite shinigami of EnMaCho, there is never a 'happily ever after.' Death is their profession, and truth-spun nightmare their burden. That is the real reason they work in pairs--to share what makes each other, so it does not shatter them beyond repair.
Saya knows Yuma has been betrayed, because Yuma lets no one betray Saya without consequence. Yuma closes her eyes and sees Saya falling, falling, because in the next instant her partner catches hold of her, keeps her still.
Most importantly, Saya and Yuma make each other happy. When they lose themselves in a pretense of normalcy, in fashion, silk and 'how pretty is that boy in the window?,' Yuma forgets that she is no longer alive. Even if she's never asked, she believes (or perhaps wishes?) that Saya feels the same way ( ... )
