Playstation 3 recommendations?

Hello everyone. I'm currently looking into buying a Playstation 3, and I wanted to pick your brains about PS exclusives.

Generally what I'm into are non-turn based action/adventure games, but I'm fairly particular in what I like. I'm not into "realistic" war games that draw from historical events (such a WWII), and generally steer clear of ( Read more... )

I don't know if these games would interest you or not, but I personally love the Lego games, especially Star Wars and Harry Potter (those are the best of the series.)

Thank you for your reply.

I've only ever played years 1-4 on my DS. It was a fairly decent game, and I've been looking into the 360 version for a while, so I may end up renting it. Assuming it is more in depth than the DS version.

I'm particularly looking into exclusives, at this point. Mostly because I own a 360 and a Wii already and I'm deciding between the PS3 and Vita. I know a lot of these are PS2 ports, but they are games that I haven't played, so getting to experience them in HD is kind of perfect.

I don't know what the DS version looks like, but the PS3 version is a pretty involved game. You follow the movie's/books pretty closely and get to be completely involved in the storyline. The most involved lego games are going to be Harry Potter and Star Wars. Batman was too quick to finish and didn't have enough of a challenge to me. Indiana Jones was fun but nowhere near as involved as Harry Potter and Star Wars. I have not played Pirates/the second Indiana Jones/Star Wars III Clone Wars/Harry Potter years 5-7 so I cannot vouch for the gameplay. But I figure the second Harry Potter and the Star Wars Clone Wars will be pretty involved if they are anything like their predecessors. The 360 versions are probably pretty much the same, so I can't help you there.

I definitely recommend Uncharted, especially 2. The first one was good, but the second one was so much better. You did say it isn't one of the games that fits what you normally play, but it is such an amazing game.

Would you recommend bypassing the first game and jumping straight into the second? I want to make sure I'll be able to follow the story. I try my best not to skip the first installment of any series, but in certain cases (like with Fable 2), I'll just jump right in.

Jumping in to say that the first one in incredibly hard if you aren't used to those types of games. I'm awful at shooters, and even when playing on easy mode I kept getting killed by the mobs of baddies.

The second one has added a "very easy" mode and I think a slightly more balanced system, though I only watched my friend play instead of playing it myself.

It might be best to just watch a Let's Play of the first one to get the drift of the story; the second one features some recurring characters that might be less impactful if you don't know who they are already.

I was looking the games up on gamestop, and I noticed a 1&2 bundle for 40 bucks. I think I may buy that and try both of them out, before moving onto the third. Buying the bundle is cheaper than buying them both separately, and this way I have the option of going through both, or doing your LP suggestion if I can't handle it. I was actually really happy to see it so cheaply priced!

Thanks.

I can't really speak for Ico, but as far as Shadows of the Colossus goes, I think it's more about the experience and story than it is about gameplay. I kind of like to call it that game where you only have "boss battles". (Or, from what I've played so far, anyways.) Regardless, it's fun though, and worth checking out! You definitely have to get creative with defeating some of the colossi, so I think you'd at least enjoy that one.

Heavy Rain is another PS3 exclusive that a lot of people enjoy. Not really sure how to explain it, because its different than a lot of other games out there. It's fun though, and the story is really interesting, so it's also worth checking out!

Yeah, with Shadows and Ico I was kind of drawn in by certain reviews I've read that detail the emotional aspects, particularly with Ico, but also with the horse in Shadows. Ever since playing Fable 2, I've really been looking for "that" game that will allow me to become emotionally invested in a creature, and does not reduce itself to a Nintendogs style game or something along those lines.

The boss battles in SoTC look breathtaking, from what I've seen. Def. not looking to spoil anything for anyone, but there is a certain boss fight in Arkham City where you're forced to use many different means to take down a single enemy. The whole idea of a boss battle with seemingly endless possibilities fascinates me, because I am so used to playing straight forward boss battles like in the Zelda series.

I'll start researching Heavy Rain, for sure. Thanks for your input. :)

Demon's Souls is definitely worth a purchase, especially now that it's so cheap. Plus, your hard-earned skills are equally applicable to the sequel, so you'll have an easier time with it than your Xbox-owning friends.

And Uncharted isn't much of a shooter, if that's what you're worried about. There's only a handful of guns to choose from (two types of your basic pistol/smg/shotgun/sniper rifle/RPG at most) with patently obvious tactical advantages, and the "shooting" sections are really, really easy. Plot and story and adventure trump these to make it a worthwhile purchase, if that's what you're worried about.

And if you're considering shooters, Killzone 2 isn't bad. It's neither realistic nor based on real life events, but it's very challenging and entertaining, too. Same goes with the Resistance series.

I'll be honest -- Demon's Souls scares me. I've been reading reviews on Dark Souls, and I sort of cheated and looked at the opening sequence. It looks amazing. I've been on the fence for weeks about whether or not to get it. If you're right about the whole learning curve, it may actually be in my best interest to start with the cheaper, easier version and work my way up. I'm glad to hear there is some kind of familiarity in the series which allows for an actual learning curve. That's a relief. I will probably end up getting both for my PS3, because I do not have a Gold account on my 360, and the online "death" messages that people leave in the game seem like they may be somewhat helpful ( ... )

As far as Uncharted goes, I did most of the shooting sections by shooting from one secure location without running around (there are one or two where you might have to change locations a few times).

Aiming is done in first person but you can also shoot "from the hip", staying in third person without aiming.

I consider the Uncharted series a must-have for anyone with a PS3. :)
