I'm using a Dell XPS9000 for gaming I can run most games at a "high" graphics setting. With a monitor and microsoft office it was 1200usd after taxes a year ago. The only downside is that the tower is pretty huge. This is their current build of it.

Since you say a step up from your current PC, what do you have now? There are a lot of graphics cards out there, so what I usually do is just google the name of it and look for reviews. You can usually find good information. If you go with Intel, I would get at least an i5 processor (a step below an i7), but I don't know anything about AMD. Anything that says Intel graphics or integrated graphics is not good for gaming. Some games will run with low settings, some probably will not run at all. For RAM, I would goo with at least 6 GB, since technology is just going to get more demanding. I hope that was a little bit helpful! I know about laptops more than desktops so hopefully the same info applies. :)

If you're feeling adventurous and have the time to do some research, you might want to take a look at http://www.cyberpowerpc.com

My boyfriend recently ordered a gaming PC from there--you can customize every little feature yourself if you know what you're doing, or you can go through newegg.com to order a pre-built computer (where there are plenty of reviews). I'd never heard of the CyberPower brand before, but the reviews are pretty good and the bf is pleased thus far. As for price, there's one on Newegg now with somewhat better specs for $700 (monitor not included though).

His came with a Radeon HD 5000-something graphics card and it's performed great raiding in WoW and playing Portal 2. Been meaning to try Rift.
