The game came out months ago. I know got sent back to the drawing board, but I figured it was still playable to the people who still endeavored to suffer through it.
So is this the "new and improved, rebuilt from the ground up" version of the game?
I've been looking froward to it ever since they announced it (Two years ago, was it? I can't remember), but then I played the beta months ago and cancelled the preorder right away.
The UI was unintuitive and it took too many clicks to get to the window/option you needed, there was too much lag, not enough leves (quests) or other content (a story quest only every 10 levels, if I remember correctly). I hated the market wards. There was a bunch of other small details that didn't seem important at first glance but were annoying when you (well, I) played.
That's why they're still not charging the subscription fee. The game was more or less a flop. :S
They're working hard to improve it, though. I read the game updates every now and then to see how much it improved, but so far they haven't convinced me yet.
If you got it as a present, I think you can still have enough fun with it. :) It looks gorgeous, the community probably isn't bad, updates are still coming. And hey, it's box-to-play!
I currently play FFXIV and have been playing since Alpha.

They've streamlined the UI a TON since the beginning.

The Lag is gone

It's annoying that you can only pick up 8 leves a day, but it generally takes me several hours to complete the 8 I pick up. They've also implemented side-quests (they're not leves, so they don't count toward the 8), and the story quests are at 10, 20, 26, 30, 36, and 42 iirc and each job gets a quest every 10 levels after 20 I believe.
I hated the market wards. The market wards aren't a pain in the ass anymore. They've added a search function - it tells you the price of the item and what ward it's in. Also the wards no longer have generic names, but are categories (weapons go here, tools for crafts go here, gear in x level range goes here, etc) and you get less tax on a sold item if

This is actually... the finished version. Not the beta. They ran the beta for months and never bothered to actually read any of the commentary from the beta testers ... but then they released the game anyway.
I'm sure it is *much* better now than it was on release (you're ... probably not booted off every 5 minutes and penalized for "logging out" during your quests anymore), but it still has a long way to go.
But. For free. It's not shabby. I hope you enjoy it.
Like others have said, it's not the beta. The beta was almost a year ago. This is the full release of the game, it's just free because of what a huge flop the release was - they only managed to keep 5% of the initial player base. They're keeping it free until they fix it enough, then it'll be pay-to-play.
