Anyone playing FFXIV Beta?

If you buy the actuall game there is no monthly subcription fee.

I just got it as a gift from my hubby.

I don't play it (computer can't handle it), but a good friend does, and we've talked about it a bit. Apparently, they scrapped the initial development team, and brought in a whole new group to revamp things. She was on the verge of quitting, and is now quite satisfied with it. One of the best changes is that they've allowed a second character without paying (initially, you got one character free, and any more increased your monthly fee). I'm not sure if that will hold once its pay-to-play, but it damn better.

Anyway, while it did have a lousy launch, things are improving. These games are rarely all that great to start, lots of work always has to go into them after they hit the market. Try comparing it to City of Heroes or WoW at launch, rather than their current status. Doesn't seem quite so bad then, though it was definitely a very rough start. Since it's still free to play, I'd strongly suggest taking another look if you can, may be well worth your time.

They're leaving it free until they work out the issues they're having and release the PS3 version of it. After that, they'll likely start charging the regular fee for it.
