If the Intrinsic Field thingydealy turned one guy into a godlike superhero, why didn't the military start shoving guys in there by the truckload?

Who's to say they didn't? Maybe only Jon was able to restructure himself (how many atomic physicists would volunteer for that experiment?).

After it'd worked once? Probably a few.

Alternatively, you could argue that the government is terrified of what might happen if someone less tractable than Jon got his powers, and shut down intrinsic field research. But that just raises the question of why the Reds don't line up their physicists for the treatment instead. I prefer my original explanation: Jon's special.

I can believe that the Reds don't have intrinsic field technology.

But with the kind of abilities and perception he gained, I'm not sure Jon's puny human physics knowledge really helped him that much.

Since it takes place in the 80's, just say the cast of Star Trek: The next Generation is signing autographs on the other side of the field.

Some casualties will occur as physicists trample one another to gte to be first in line to ogle Lt Tasha Yar, but you should see some results.

It's a flashback, though; he got zapped sometime in the 60s, so maybe the Original Series. Uhura, then.

I have a few ideas that 2h2o pretty much covered ( ... )

I think that the extent of Jon's powers and transcendence is so great that his puny human intelligence barely matters to any post-transformation activities.

Hm, I'm pretty sure Jon wouldn't want to create another superhuman; he's been made so distant and solipsistic by his powers, he either wouldn't want to inflict the misery on someone or he wouldn't care enough to help.

Since Jon turned out to be (at least initially) quite docile, I think the government would totally do it again.
