If the Intrinsic Field thingydealy turned one guy into a godlike superhero, why didn't the military start shoving guys in there by the truckload?

Who's to say they didn't? Maybe only Jon was able to restructure himself (how many atomic physicists would volunteer for that experiment?).

Alternatively, you could argue that the government is terrified of what might happen if someone less tractable than Jon got his powers, and shut down intrinsic field research. But that just raises the question of why the Reds don't line up their physicists for the treatment instead. I prefer my original explanation: Jon's special.

I can believe that the Reds don't have intrinsic field technology.

But with the kind of abilities and perception he gained, I'm not sure Jon's puny human physics knowledge really helped him that much.
