So what am I fannish about at the moment?

I've been promising a while to do a post with my reactions to current fannish obsessions. Let's see if this time I actually make it.

Leaving SPN till last, let's start with the Buffy comic, which ( I finally managed to get up to date on this week )

a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her. I started watching Angel pretty much with season two. I kinda liked Wesley all along but the first time I was inspired to write for both AtS in general and Wes in particular was in the hiatus between Sleep Tight and Forgiving. Wes by this time was very competent and when faced with a horrible decision made a tough and horrible decision for all the best reasons. The fallout from it and how Wes reacted I just found fascinating. Plus part of me wanted to give him back some of what he lost for a while there so...

b. One of his/her best traits. He's not afraid of making the tough decisions, no matter the personal cost.

c. One of his/her worst traits. He can get very narrowly focused on what's important and what isn't. And when he does, he's very quick to be willing to sacrifice all that he doesn't consider important.

d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character. I found Wes fairly easy to write right from the beginning. Wes' head was never hard ( ... )

I think lots of us feel that way. :)

If you ever get back to Unity, I'm sure there are many of us who would be glad to see it. :)

Oh, cool---I've been meaning to pick up a copy of SPN: Origins, so I'm glad to hear that it's worth a read. I can ignore the contradictions, I think.

And for the meme, how about Dean?

a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her. I think it was the end of Nightmare that made me want to write both Sam and Dean. But it was Benders that led to my first fic.
b. One of his/her best traits. His utter and complete loyalty and protectiveness to his family
c. One of his/her worst traits. His tendency to not value himself when weighing the odds and risks.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character. It took me a while to get comfortable with his voice, although I think that had more to do with the fact I'd been writing almost exclusively British and Irish characters for a while and I needed to find my American voice again. Now? It's dead simple getting into his head and writing his voice -- especially with all the play he gets at Fandom High. :)
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character (if I've written them). Hm. I think I'd probably pick one of the long discussions Dean has had with Sammy in FH. Just because interacting with his ( ... )

i can't stand the art in origins either, and i KNOW the canon inconsistencies are going to drive me bugnuts, and yet... i plan to keep reading. possibly i'm just being masochistic. i keep hoping it will get better or that i'll get used to the art, at least.

I think I'm less disturbed by the bad art than some people because I have read/collected some comice with truly horrible art before. (I used to read the original Star Wars comic by Marvel - there were a lot of issues where Chewbacca had a moustache for Force's sake!) Throw in the fact that I'm in the place of fannish obsession with SPN that I want any new stories set in that 'verse that I can possibly get and I can live with the art.

And for the meme:

a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her. I love all the Winchesters, but the moment that really made me fall for John is in Salvation, after he's pulled the holy water in the water tower trick on the demons just before he runs off away from them. He just gives this little boy grin and I went "Ohhhh..." That was when I fell for the character hook, line and sinker.

b. One of his/her best traits. His persistance/stubborness/strength. The thing that made him go out and become one of the best (if not the best) demon hunter out there. The thing that ( ... )

Heh, you have more patience with Joss than I do. This whole Ethan thing is the last straw for me. I haven't much liked the comics in the first place, and killing off Ethan was just so pointless and horrid!

It was, I agree. Beyond the whole killing off a great character for no good reason, there's also the outrage of "you brought Ethan back and then killed him without even letting him have a scene with Giles?!"

But... it didn't have as much impact for me because of how fragmented the story is. Which really doesn't sound like a reason to continue collecting, granted, but it does mean that the comic didn't get thrown across the room when I read that scene.

Bascially at this point I think part of the reason I'm going to continue collecting is all the damned trouble I went through to get the first four issues and set up a subscription at the new local comic shop...

That and I'm an optimist that it might get better?

I love your summations of the different seasons. Especially S2 as that quote still makes me all happy inside. And word on the lack of cliffhanger.

I'm not sure everyone sees the seasons as being summed up the same way, but when I think of them that's the things that jump out the most at me.

And I have rewatched the tag of AHBL2 dozens of times now and it makes me grin like an idiot every. single. time.

And word on the lack of cliffhanger.I really really loathe the trend towards season ending cliffhangers -- it makes May a really frustrating time to watch tv, and often downright depressing. I remember one may a few years ago, that Blair was dead on the Sentinel at the season finale, Angel was dead and sent to hell at the season finale of Buffy, I think Gabrielle on Xena was dead too, though I'm not sure, the series finale of Once a Thief had the three main characters blowing up in a warehouse, and oh, Mulder was dead again too ( ... )
