Joy & Delight or Why I'm glad I'm renting

We have water coming in on the baseboards downstairs in John & Christina's place. At first, we thought it was a broken pipe by the toilet but cleaning up and investigating showed that water is coming in under the baseboards in the living room, the kitchen, and the bedroom. It's become a veritable pool in each of the rooms. We've been calling 24 ( Read more... )

I've got a lake in my garage and I'm sure my main room isn't far behind. I've been shop vac-ing for 5 hours, and haven't made a dent. There are some things I am SO not going to miss when I move.

Good Luck!

EEEEE!

That's terrible.

Have you called your landlord? This is something that landlords typically handle. Check me on the rent code, but I think he or she is obligated to provide someplace else for you to live and to pay some months'--three, I think--relocation expenses if the house cannot be made habitable.

I know that doesn't help with the flooding right now, but as renters, you do have some restitution.

can you point me to the part of the law that requires him to provide somewhere else to stay? I have been looking everywhere and can't find it.

No...I'd have to go through the code as well. I also could be entirely wrong. I will need to read the code myself in the next day or so because we need to see if we can obligate our landlord to do anything about helping us dry out the house. If I find anything useful, I'll let you know.

I have a question (as a landlord :) If the garage in the house I'm renting floods and damages some of my tenants belongings, am I liable for that? I know that I would be if it was from negligence on my part, but our house has never had any water before. My first thought is that would be under their renter's insurance, but I thought you may have an idea...if not, that's ok!

Thanks!!

You and Lycanidae remind me that maybe it'd be a good idea to pick things up off the basement floor.

Fuck. I'm meeting a contractor for some estimates on repairs from my tenant today at my rental house, at least that will give me a chance to check on the basement there. The pump doesn't always come on by itself.

Our landlord said, "Oh, it'll just dry out by itself." Yeah, right. Idiot.
