So, I just watched Akira, since I'd heard about it a bit, and was curious. The whole thing was rather confusing, but I am able to generate a couple opinions:
Even though this is set some in circa 2030, it was made in the 80's. And a Japanese work set in the 80s can have fashion sense just as awful as American stuff.

I think the first time I heard about Akira was on some Darkwing Duck website. LOL. Something about drawing Negaduck enacting the transformation sequence, I think? I was always so squicked out by what I'd heard about it that I never have tried to see it.

Darkwing Duck..? I've heard about having reenactments of that scene in different fandoms, but not something so innocuous as Darkwing Duck..

XD Darkwing Duck fans are very ... interesting.

It's a pretty good fandom, too, since most people grew up with show and are quite mature. I don't think I saw a scary fan the whole time I was in the fandom.
