So, I just watched Akira, since I'd heard about it a bit, and was curious. The whole thing was rather confusing, but I am able to generate a couple opinions:
Even though this is set some in circa 2030, it was made in the 80's. And a Japanese work set in the 80s can have fashion sense just as awful as American stuff. 
This is not a kid's movie. It has some pretty mature stuff, such as a surprising amount of blood and violence (the fact that it's animated just makes it more surreal). There's also this nightmare-inducing transformation sequence that makes me squemish just thinking about it.
I'm still not sure whether I like it or not, but I can't complain about it not being original..
