So after a couple nights of dedicated laundry folding, my game table downstairs is clear and ready. So now that the fields are ready, it's time to revisit my armies ( Read more... )

Current options:
HQ 30pts (sticky bombs)
6 stands of 4th Indians, mortar, A.T. rifle, and command 180pts (sticky bombs)
6 stands of 4th Indians, mortar, A.T. rifle, and command 180pts (sticky bombs)
2 Troops of 18pounders, 1 troop of 4.5s, and 2 carrier mounted observers 800pts
4 3in mortars 110pts

Or,
HQ 25pts
6 stands of 4th Indians, mortar, A.T. rifle, and command 175pts
4 stands of 4th Indians, mortar, A.T. rifle, and command 135pts
3 valentines 495pts
2 sections of 8th army mgs 145pts
2 sections of 8th army mgs 145pts
4 8th army royal portee 180pts

The second list is probably better suited, but the first has all the arty…which is strangely compelling.

Clearly I understand the desire for guns - taking both of my possible artillery batteries, and the Falcos count as a third.

Although looking at those lists... oof. The first one and all those guns, but the second and the valentines, and all those MGs. I don't like the prospects of either one.

I look at it like this.
Your list has more troops and more support regardless of which version I take. The second list lets me engage more targets and cover more ground, which in a senereo based game is key. The big point is that most of the time those 3 troops of arty are only going to be firing at one target. Granted, they should do a number on whatever they’re shooting at, but it’s still only one target per turn. You’ll have me outgunned between 2 potential batteries, air power, HMGs, and armor. Who knows how accurate that firepower will be, but if you throw that many dice my way I’m not confident that the quality of my firepower can carry the day. Of course, dice are involved and we know how that goes.
I saw your other post and just haven’t had enough time to sit down and respond in a way that does it justice.
See you tonight.

So much of "which army would be worse to fight" will depend on the scenario. If you end up the aggressor, the tanks and portees will probably serve you better. But if you end up on the defense, unleashing hell with that arty as I try and move across the field just sounds like a recipe for a field of Italian casualties.

I'll need to coordinate with Ceri to find a weekend where we can dedicate an evening to a good game.

And as for my other posts - no worries. It took me four days to write it in the first place. :)
