Uh...is that dangerous?

[there's a pause, and then Zedd's voice comes through] It's fairly simple, actually. I only give a warning because there's the chance of a hiccup while I'm working if someone steps through one of the graces.

Otherwise, it's perfectly safe.

Why?

[some more, faint crackling]

Just...making sure.

You're quite welcome to stop by and see, though there will be a little blood, if you're squeamish.

Basically, what I'm doing is setting my magic aside in a...well, call it a container, which I'm making using a bit of magic and these symbols, plus the salt and wizard's sand and a little blood. That way, I can examine it, test it, and have it completely contained and controlled.

Let's me check certain things in a very safe way, actually.

Blood, Zedd?

I'm not familiar with magic, but the use of blood in any sort of reaction...

Blood, yes, yes. It's the best way to connect myself to the grace and to ensure the test is accurate as possible.

I won't say it's ...well...something I don't do on a normal basis, of course.

I would hope not.

The use of blood in an array - that's a transmutation circle, which is used to focus the power of alchemical reactions - is to tie it to the alchemist...

Arrays are only drawn in blood when it's something between life and death, or it's an emergency and there is nothing else to draw it with. Even then, it's dangerous.

I can only assume the use of blood in magic is somehow similar...

'Tie it to the alchemist.' Precisely. How could I measure my magic without tying it to myself? Do not worry. The only possible danger will be to myself, and that is negligible, for I know what I am doing.

Blood is a powerful tool in magic, but not so dire as you paint it, my boy. It is a way to strengthen the spells, to imbue the spell forms with the magic I have, more than just the magic I can place upon it by drawing it in the first place.

Need any specific reagents, or are you good?

Reagents? [Zedd snorts] You keep saying you aren't a wizard, and you keep thinking like one, anyway.

All I need is the few things I have here, that's all. This isn't some grand spell form, just a little...examination.

Bein' around my... adventuring companion for about ten years, you pick some shit up.

I'd like to have a look if ya don't mind. See just how similar it is.

Tell me about this Keeper guy. He doesn't sound too friendly.

Ahh, I suppose. Still. You have the mind for it.

I'm at the storage facility. I'll be here for a while. Stop by. I have apples.

The Keeper? Well, the Keeper of the Dead is the...the 'spirit' that watches over and is lord of the world of the dead. But He has never been alive...he is completly removed from the light of the creator. He hates the gift, especially, but any and all life is an affront to him, an insult, something to be destroyed.

And he has the power to destroy it, too, if ever the veil fails us.

I admit I'm quite curious. It appears the magic you practice is different than the magic I am familiar with through traversing through different worlds.

Indeed, it seems there are more kinds of magic that I ever thought possible. In my world, there are two halves to magic. The additive, which I have, and subtractive, which no has had in thousands of years. If I had subtractive, well, then, I could do some real tests, but the best I can do now is to prod and poke at it like this.

Two halves to a whole. A very common equation to many things. I myself am a man more of science, but the magical arts are quite fascinating.

On a side note, are you familiar with the concepts of light and darkness within a person's heart?

Reply

wizardsgrace August 5 2008, 00:28:07 UTC
Indeed. Man and woman, light and dar...dark. Yes, yes, I know a little of the thought, though it is a philosophy in my world more than anything of substance. Good and Evil, love and hate, that sort of thing, nothing of real...substance.

Even subtractive magic is something which is neither good nor evil, light or dark...like life and death, it merely is.

Perhaps you could share some insight on your magic?

Insight on magic? What manner of insight are you looking for; it is quite a broad topic.

My needs are decidedly specific, so while I would greatly like to hear about most of it, I need to know what every doctor would want to know.

Theories and ways of beating death. Truely, what every practicioner of medicine's ulimate goal.

[There is a long pause] No one can cheat the Keeper.
