T'Pol hasn't done anything to actively aggravate her and she's reluctant to make any snap judgements about an alien species.

Whether they keep them or not, New Years resolutions are mostly made because a year gives a definable starting point. You remember the exact date you set out to do something.

Even if your goal ends up difficult, the first of the year's a pretty logical starting point if you also want to gauge your success or when you came to a decision.
