I'm not gonna wank in that thread. I'm not gonna wank in that thread. I'm not gonna wank in that thread.
No, I haven't seen the meme. Do you have a link?
I've seen this exact "debate" all so many times and I still react so strongly to it. The thing is that both have a point hidden somewhere there. I've myself made the argument that women live in the real world and need to learn to protect themselves like men do(avoid dark alleys, carry and use something heavy or pointy, take self-defense classes, etc.) but that's all external protection - offensive one. Changing oneself internally, including the way you dress, is just letting the fuckers dictate the rules and then you're always on the defensive. No way in hell.
I do love it and I think this person is right about many things.
Except for hir assumption that everyone is a law abiding citizen who listens to reason. Murder's illegal but it's still perpetuated. Men are taught (in general) how to defend themselves, why not women?
Well I am all for self defense (obviously--as a martial artist!) but I don't think that we should HAVE to defend ourselves. That's the entire point of that post. Of course people are going to break the law, but rape is not done because a woman doesn't know how to defend herself. As much as I like to think I could take care of myself, if someone really wants to hurt another person, they're going to manage to do it. That post was aimed more at rape apologists, I think. That, and rapists who never really think of themselves as rapists.
