She was cured and free to touch and be touched in return, yet she still clung to her scarves, long sleeves and gloves with a tenacity that had surprised everyone at the mansion. It was as if she was afraid to believe that her skin was no longer toxic. Perhaps it was from having too many people already stuck in her mind that made her wary to trust in her newfound ability to touch. Or perhaps it was just an old habit ingrained from too many years of necessity. Whatever the case was, Marie still wore her gloves long after she had been cured. The others tried to break her of the habit by hiding or destroying her loves. It was only Logan who seemed to understand and didn’t interfere with her desire or need to wear gloves. Instead, he always made sure to have a spare pair of gloves for her tucked away in his drawers.
“You do realize that you’re only enabling Marie instead of helping her,” Storm said as she watched Logan carefully fold a pair of silk gloves into his drawer.
“Really?” Logan asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes, really.”
”Maybe I am just helping her to feel safe.”
”That’s the problem, she shouldn’t need to feel safe by wearing a pair of gloves.”
”Look ‘Ro, I don’t see you taking away the younger children’s security blankets or teddy bears just because they don’t need a blanket or a toy to feel safe.”
”Marie’s not a little girl anymore.”
”No, she’s not, but maybe she still needs a sense of security that her gloves give her.”
”You’re impossible,” Storm replied with a sigh.
“No, just a man who’s in love. I am sure that the Professor or Jeannie could have explained why Marie needs the gloves, I can’t,” Logan admitted.
“Surely you know that she’ll never leave Bobby?”
”Yeah but I ain’t asking her to do that. I’m just making sure that she has what she needs and she needs these gloves that everyone else tries to keep from her. I made her a promise a long time ago to protect her and keep her safe. If gloves make her feel safe and protected then it’s a small thing to do.”
”Logan,” Storm began before he cut her off again.
”No ‘Ro, I don’t need a lecture on the impossibility of loving a woman who’s with someone else. I’ve done it before with Jeannie, and it’s probably what drove Marie into Bobby’s arms. But the fact that I love her ain’t the point that I’m trying to make here. She’s a grown woman now, and if she was old enough to take the cure on her own, she’s old enough to make her own decisions. And if she decides to wear gloves even if she don’t need them, then maybe we should all respect her decisions. Just let her be, and let me be.”
”Fine, Logan, but I can’t see this ending well.”
”It never does, but that’s life, ain’t it.”
Storm sighed as she continued to watch Logan and she wondered what type of cruel fate that had lead him to fall in love with two women both of whom were in relationships with men that they loved. She knew that Marie cared for Logan and she relied on him in a way that she didn’t rely on Bobby, but Storm also knew that Marie had grown out of her infatuation for Logan during the time he had been away searching for his past. And unlike Jean, Marie knew that she wanted to be with Bobby and no matter how seductive Logan could be, he could never convince Marie to leave Bobby. She shook her head as she left Logan’s room, perhaps he was right in saying that they should let Marie and her need for glovers be, but Storm couldn’t help but worry that it was causing Marie harm.
