Everyone at the mansion knew that there was a special bond between Logan and Marie. No one really knew or understood the bond that existed between them, not even the two resident telepaths. After Wolverine had left on his mission, which none of the students could figure out what it was about, Rogue wore his dog tags like they were a talisman of some sort. It didn’t matter what she was wearing, the dog tags were always present, a reminder to everyone that she was connected to Wolverine.

For Jean Grey, they were a constant reminder of the mysterious stranger who had tempted her to leave Scott and of the delicate relationship that she had with Rogue due to her feelings for Logan. For Scott, the fearless leader, they were a reminder of how Logan seemed to hurt everyone whom he came in contact with, especially the young and impressionable girl that he had saved. For Storm and the Professor, the dog tags were merely the symbol of Logan’s promise to Rogue to return and to protect her.

For Logan, away in the Canadian wilderness where he was searching for his past, the dog tags represented the promise of a future to him. Once he found his past and had discovered who and what he had been before he had woken up in the forest without a memory fifteen years ago, he could return to Westchester and start living for the future instead of just for the present. And the girl around whose neck his dog tags rested, she became a symbol to him during his long nightmare filled nights. Marie became his talisman that he was a good and decent man and not the animal that he feared he was.

For Rogue, they were a promise for Logan to return and a hope that when he did return that he would be over his infatuation with Dr. Grey. And sometimes when she touched the warmed metal, she couldn’t help but hope that he would finally see her as a grown woman instead of the child that he insisted on seeing her as. And for Bobby Drake, who loved Marie with an intensity that went beyond his years, Logan’s dog tags represented how he could never really be close to the woman that he had fallen in love with. Even if she didn’t have poisonous skin, Marie would always remain aloof and untouchable because her heart belonged to the man who had given her the dog tags as a symbol of his promise to her.

It tore Bobby up on the inside, although he carefully hid it from everyone that the Marie was still in love with Wolverine. He wanted to believe that it was nothing more than hero worship, but he could sense the distance that she created between them even when she agreed to be his girlfriend. Every time that he thought that he had grown closer to her, she would finger the dog tags that she wore around her neck. And he would lose a little piece of the closeness that he had created. Her lips would curve in a nostalgic smile as her eyes took on a far away look, and he knew that she had gone to a place where only she and Logan existed. Bobby would always wait patiently for the moment to pass, but it still hurt him. Yet he couldn’t give up Marie, because he loved her, even if she would never love him like he loved her.
