This one actually turned out a lot darker than I had intended it to turn out.

Title: Dreams
Author: Sweetness (aaronlisa@gmail.com)
Pairing: Wolverine/Rogue
Rating: FR13
Disclaimer: X-men belong to Marvel Comics and Twentieth Century Fox.
Notes: Written for fic_variations for round #2 (fashion). Set post-X2.

In her dreams, Marie does not have toxic skin. She is free to wear anything that she wants or doesn’t want to wear. She doesn’t have to wear gloves or scarves or long sleeves to protect everyone, including herself, from the effects of her skin. She can show as much skin as she wants to show or doesn’t want to show. Her poisonous skin does not dictate her clothing to her, and most importantly she is free to touch and to be touched. Her dreams are a very liberating experience for Marie because in her dreams she never had to become Rogue.

In her dreams she wears a slinky and sexy black dress that shows off her curves and her flawless creamy skin. And she walks to Logan’s door and throws it wide open. She finds him waiting for her just like she’s imagined and dreamed so many times before in her waking moments. This time though it’s for real and it’s not a dream that she will wake up from in frustration and sadness. It’s reality and she doesn’t have toxic skin and Logan is waiting for her and no one else.

But her dreams always end with the rising sun and she becomes a young woman who wakes up in tears from frustration and sadness because she can’t have any of the things that she desperately wants to have. She sits up in her bed and hugs her knees close to her chest and she shakes off the last vestiges of the dream before she gets up and gets dressed. She dons the clothes that she’s grown to hate because they cover her perfect skin so that it will protect both herself and the others from the toxicity of her skin. Her skin works both ways in the fact that it pulls in the life force of those that she touches as it drains it from her unintentional victims. Before she leaves her room, she tugs on the gloves that once seemed so elegant but are just bitter reminders for her now.

She walks down the hall and pauses in front of Logan’s door. Each day this is getting harder for her because she longs to throw open the door and take whatever he is willing to give her, even if she knows that he will never love her like she wants him to love her. All she has to do is open the door and take what he has to give her. Every morning, she resists because Marie wants it all, not just half measures. Instead of throwing opening his door, she walks by it and leaves him to his dreams, which are probably full of Jean Grey and what could have been if the doctor had lived instead of perishing at Alkali Lake.

Marie makes her way down to the dining room where she’s joined by the other students and teachers. She silently eats her breakfast as she allows her companions’ voices to flow over her and make the pain go away for another day. Then she’s ready to go about her day and she pretends that everything is normal. She pretends that she’s okay with the confining clothing and the lack of touch and that she loves Bobby just like he loves her. She pretends that it’s okay that she can’t touch her boyfriend and that she doesn’t dream of another man touching her and making her complete at night. And the day passes by while she pretends until it’s time for bed and she collapses onto her mattress already anxious for the dreams to start because even though they aren’t real, they’re so much better than her life is.
