Mitsuru 002 // Playing With Fire

May 28, 2010 20:42

[Junctioning has been a highly odd experience. The material leading up to it had been understandable, with a bit of studying. But the actual field experience had been different from what she was used to. It was almost like learning how to hold a sword all over again, but with her other hand. Slightly familiar, but still awkward enough to make ( Read more... )

[ Ah, but Magic is where Terra felt she truly shines. It was her most comfortable subject, between this and her training.

Except lately. Lately her magic has been less than effective. But maybe it was because she hadn't been practicing lately. Surely. . . her left arm crackles slightly, and she gives it a shake, moving over towards Mitsuru, quietly amused by that expression on the redhead's face. It looked like how Terra looked during math class. ]

Do you want some help? I think it's the level of control... like this.

[ She turns her attention towards the dummy. ] I'll cast a low Fire spell, and you can finish it off, okay?

[ Only that's SO not what happens. She flicks her wrist a little, her power crackles, and the next thing she knows fire is EVERYWHERE, engulfing the poor dummy. Terra is momentarily struck dumb because wut. That wasn't supposed to happen. ]

"I don't think-"

[Mitsuru is about to say that it isn't necessary. She grasps the theory behind this, even if she's not fond of what it is they're practicing through.

At least, that's what she's about to say. But then the training dummy manages to explode, and Mitsuru is more busy with throwing her arms up against the sudden heat that flares up in her face. It's enough to make her mind go blank, and she even gasps a little from the sudden change in temperature.]

[ Crap. CRAP! Terra draws in a quick breath, her body reacting, growing more tense - her magic responded to her emotions most of the time, so her fear only fueled the uncontrollable aspect. While the instructor is in the process of getting some of the fire under control, Terra gestures again. ]

I can fix this..!

[ Just as the fire starts to calm down, it flares up again, this time catching one of the cadet's sleeves on fire because she'd stood to cl♦ose. The girl lets out a panicked shriek and flails back while her two friends try to put out the fire on her arm. Stop Drop and Roll! ]

"This is not what I'd call control!"

[Mitsuru just keeps her voice in check. No shouting just yet, especially since some of the cadets are already taking care of that for her. She takes several steps back from the growing fire, scrambling to get her thoughts in control...And trying to call up on Artemisia.

It's difficult, though. Half her thoughts are still screaming 'FIRE' and 'move away!' The fact that she doesn't have her Evoker on her doesn't make this any easier, either. But through that, she can still hear her voice, sounding remarkably firm, even with what's happening]

"Branford, what's going on? Why can't you-?"

[The fire gives a nice, loud, WHOOMPH as she says that, sending up a goat of orange and red.]

[Meanwhile, Rion appears to be having trouble with it, not too far away. It's interesting, because it's not like he's just standing there and not having any idea what he's doing, and it's not like he's not getting results - he is creating fire. But each time there's something a little bit off.

This would make sense if it were the same thing consistently that he's getting wrong, but it isn't. It's always something different. Like imagine putting a puzzle together, and you've got all but a few pieces. You put it away, and you start over, and there are still a few pieces missing, but it's different pieces that aren't there that time, and if you could find those with the pieces that WERE missing before (but now appear to be there), you'd have a full set.

All the parts are there. He just can't put them together.]

[Mitsuru notes that as she finishes her own exercises. And when the supervisor gives her a nod to show that she's completed this section, she starts to move over to where he's standing.

She's vaguely familiar with this person, mainly because of his speech deficiency. That board he uses doesn't appear to be nearby, and dieu, she'd really just sooner move AWAY from all this fire being slung about...But it's hard to ignore that the material just isn't clicking for someone.]

"You're having difficulty?"

[It's in his backpack - that's not too far away, and if there's something that's too complicated, he can start writing. But he nods at her slightly, then tries again - there's something, but it's not quite the intended result. A suddden burst of flame, and then nothing - not anything sustained or anything like that. And nowhere near as explosive as Terra's... uh. Exhibition.]

[Magic itself isn't completely alien to Mjrn, but nonetheless she stands nearby looking hesitant. Though she has poured over the material in question, the simple fact remains that junctioning is far different from that which she had learned elsewhere. If she could just attack the dummy in the usual manner--but she knows that would be missing the point and sighs.

She glances around -stalling, maybe- and catches sight of Mitsuru's expression. Somehow, that puts her a little at ease. There seems to be someone else not completely comfortable with this session. And she can't help herself; curiosity takes hold.]

Is it the fire you dislike, or the magic itself?

"Fire."

[Mitsuru coaches her voice to stay steady, and not snap the same way her arm and wrist does with that last spell. A thin stream of fire, barely more then a ribbon wide, leaves her hands and slams into the training dummy. Mitsuru can't keep from flicking her thumb over her fingers, trying to rub off whatever is left of that spell. Her eyes stay focused on her hand for a moment longer, not turning to face the speaker just yet.]

"I have very little attachment to this element."

[Mjrn nods before realizing the other hasn't turned to look, and so she had better speak instead.]

It seems not an easy one to master, let alone this juctioning....

[She trails off and stares at the dummy before her semi-apprehensively, wondering if she will have as little success.]

[There's a fine difference between 'little success' and 'absolute control.' Mitsuru would point that out, if she wasn't trying to shake off the last of that spell; either way, it's still an unnerving feeling.]

"However, it is necessary for further study, here."

[She turns around as she says that, and-

Pardon that momentary widening of the eyes. Even after all the changes, seeing someone with ears like that is still enough to surprise Mitsuru for a moment.]

[Spectating from some safe distance away, Kaito applauds politely at the latest explosion.]

Uwah, so cool! You can definitely tell it's some kind of weird magic after all.

[To her credit, Mitsuru doesn't flinch or start from the clapping. It's something she isn't used to receiving in class, but she still manages to pivot around smoothly and look at the applauder.]

"I believe that anything involving throwing elemental power could be classified as 'weird.'"

[She looks a bit surprised at it being 'cool,' though.]

[Rubbing at his face for a moment, Kaito smiles widely and maybe a little benignly.]

Hahah, that's not what I mean! After all, you can throw elemental power just by winging an icecube at someone. It's more that you're making it out of nothing!

"I'd prefer an ice cube to creating fire."

[That's said a little more quietly.]

"I wouldn't consider it 'out of nothing;' that implies a different principle then what we've been taught. You haven't tested this yet, yourself?"
