[Spectating from some safe distance away, Kaito applauds politely at the latest explosion.]

Uwah, so cool! You can definitely tell it's some kind of weird magic after all.

[To her credit, Mitsuru doesn't flinch or start from the clapping. It's something she isn't used to receiving in class, but she still manages to pivot around smoothly and look at the applauder.]

"I believe that anything involving throwing elemental power could be classified as 'weird.'"

[She looks a bit surprised at it being 'cool,' though.]

[Rubbing at his face for a moment, Kaito smiles widely and maybe a little benignly.]

Hahah, that's not what I mean! After all, you can throw elemental power just by winging an icecube at someone. It's more that you're making it out of nothing!

"I'd prefer an ice cube to creating fire."

"I wouldn't consider it 'out of nothing;' that implies a different principle then what we've been taught. You haven't tested this yet, yourself?"

Well, I'm not taking the right classes this term. Besides, I'm really not sure it'll work quite the same way. But the infrared for it is pretty neat. One minute, cold, the next, on fire! Transfer of energy's not supposed to work that way.

[That earns him a surprised look from Mitsuru. He doesn't look like he has any equipment for measuring temperature. She raises a hand, and with a moment of concentration...There. Just a brief candle flicker of a flame, but enough to show up for a moment.]

"You can see this in that spectrum? May I ask how that works, precisely?"
