I am my own worst critic.This is true in most areas of my life. From my photography (which I rarely show) to my writing, I pick apart nearly every single thing I do. I replay past conversations all the time, trying to figure out if I could have done better. This is especially true when I lose a good friend. Though at that point, I spend days ( Read more... )

I failed an online class in photography once due to a particularly harsh instructor who had nothing but deconstructive criticism for my work. I've been making pictures for about the last ten years. I'm also, like many artists, my own worst critic.

I've also learned something from my writing in Idol that relates to my photography, and that's don't force the issue. Don't try to be a creative superstar. Put hands to keyboard and write. Put the camera to your face, let your technical knowledge go into auto-pilot, and compose. Don't worry about whether or not you're making fine art. As I recently posted to a photography forum, more world-class images have been and will be made by the happy accident of being in the right place at the right time than anything else.

Sometimes we are so hard on ourselves that we forget to treat ourselves with kindness.

I understand. I totally do. Soemtimes it is hard to let the messages of others in. Sometimes it is time to work on that internal dialogue! good luck with everything!
